Context

The management of municipal solid wastes (MSW) is one of the most important challenges faced by our urban and industrial societies. The amount of waste produced by the population, public and private institutions, businesses and industries increases proportionally with the demographic expansion experienced by our large urban centers. The annual production of MSW by inhabitant varies around the world, from 200 kg to 800 kg, depending on the country's level of development.

All too often, huge quantities of MSW are managed inadequately in unprotected and uncontrolled dumps. This management does not take into account environmental, social and economic realities.

These practices:

· Constitute a danger to public health;

· May affect the quality of the environment by risking the pollution of groundwater, drinking water, the air and soil;

· Jeopardize residential development as well as the regional planning in the vicinity of these sites;

· Waste renewable resources.

The United Nations estimates that more than five million people die every year of diseases directly related to inadequate MSW management.

Considering the social costs, this type of management is obsolete. In the context of sustainable development, the implementation of an integrated MSW management system represents, in the long-term, a global and an economical solution for future generations.

The Cintec Group has accumulated experience in the implementation of such systems.
